ABOUT
SCHOOLS OF THE WEST
You’ve found the perfect job. Your resume is updated, polished, and ready to go. But then, there it is, the dreaded cover letter.
We get it. Writing about yourself can feel awkward, especially when it has to be formal and persuasive. But don’t let that stop you. We’re here to walk you through how to write a cover letter that will impress your future employer and help your application rise to the top of the stack.
A cover letter isn’t just a formality, it’s your opportunity to introduce yourself, share your story, and connect the dots between your experience and the position.
Think of it as your first impression on paper. Employers want to see that you’ve taken the time to understand the role and their company, and that you’re the right fit for both.
This is key: every cover letter should be customized for the specific job you’re applying for. If you’re applying for multiple jobs with similar titles, each role will have its own priorities, culture, and expectations.
Before you start writing, do your research. Read through the job description, visit the company’s website, and take note of any values or goals that stand out. The more aligned your letter is with what they’re looking for, the stronger your application will be.
1. Header
Start with a professional header that includes your name and contact information, followed by the employer’s name, title, company, and address.
Example:
Your Name
Your Email | Your Phone Number | Your City, State
Date
Hiring Manager’s Name
Company Name
Company Address
2. Introductory Paragraph
This is your hook. Grab the employer’s attention with a confident, concise opening that explains why you’re a great fit for the role. Mention how you heard about the job (hello, Of The West 👋) and highlight your enthusiasm for the position.
3. Body Paragraph (Experience)
Now it’s time to back it up. Use this section to expand on your relevant experience and highlight key accomplishments. Don’t repeat your resume; add context, tell stories, and share specific wins that show how you’ve made an impact in past roles.
4. Body Paragraph (Company Fit)
Show the employer you’ve done your homework. Share what you admire about the company and how your goals align with their mission and values. This is your chance to communicate that you get what they’re all about—and that you’re already invested.
5. Closing Paragraph
Wrap it up with a clear call to action. Express your interest in an interview and offer your availability. Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role, thank them for considering you, and let them know how to get in touch.
6. Signature
Close with a professional sign-off like “Sincerely” or “Best regards,” and sign your name. If submitting digitally, a typed signature is just fine.
By following these steps, you’ll craft a cover letter that’s polished, purposeful, and full of the confidence that employers love to see.
