ABOUT
SCHOOLS OF THE WEST
This has been on our hearts for a while, and we figured it was time to address it. It’s the need for job seekers to have professional email addresses when applying for jobs. Now we know, this seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many email addresses we see that are not professional. Like… at all! Often, the first impression you leave on a future employer is the email you send inquiring or applying for their job, so you don’t want them to be turned off immediately because of your email address! So, let’s get into it!
In today’s competitive job market, every aspect of your job application matters, including seemingly minor details like your email address. As we said above, it’s essentially the employer’s first impression of you. A professional email address immediately signals that you take yourself and your job search seriously. On the other hand, an unprofessional or inappropriate email address can raise doubts about your professionalism and suitability for the role.
Your email address is a part of your personal brand. Just like your resume, cover letter, and social media profiles, it contributes to the overall image you present to employers! A professional email address reinforces the image of a competent and reliable professional who pays attention to detail.
A professional email address lends credibility to your application. It shows that you understand the norms of professional communication and are capable of representing yourself appropriately in a professional setting. This can be particularly important for entry-level candidates or those transitioning to a new industry, where credibility may be more closely scrutinized.
Using an informal or quirky email address can lead to misinterpretation or misunderstanding. What may seem funny or clever to you could come across as unprofessional or immature to a hiring manager. By using a professional email address, you eliminate the risk of being perceived negatively based on something as simple as your email handle. For the married ladies out there or those who go by a different name, ensure your email address matches the name you go by! This will also help avoid confusion for the job seeker. If your name is Alexandria Smith and you go by Lexi, but you recently got married and your new last name is Jones, you need to ensure you are being consistent across ALL platforms with your name. Is it Alexandria Jones? Or Lexi Jones? I think you see where we are going with this. Choose the name you are going by and be consistent in using it!
Having a professional email address is a small detail but a significant step job seekers can take to enhance their chances of success in the job market It demonstrates professionalism, attention to detail, and an understanding of the expectations of the professional world. So, before hitting send on your next job application, take a moment to ensure that your email address reflects the professional image you want to convey. It could make all the difference in landing your dream job.
